The Best In Ground Basketball Hoop of 2021

Name Summary Buy on Amazon
Lifetime Mammoth

My #1 Basketball Hoop. This is after HOURS and HOURS of researching, testing and looking at EVERY available basketball hoop on the market. I’m not saying this is the BEST basketball hoop. I’m saying for our family it is the BEST Value and What fits our backyard the best. We love it. We got the 54′ backyard and spent about $1000 per hoop. bigge

Appx $1000.00

Pro Dunk

Pro Dunk is definitely the TRENDING hoop right now. Two of my neighbors, after a lot of research and after playing on my Mammoth, ended up with this Pro Dunk. They are SOLID systems. I actually love them. I prefer Mammoth because of Price and adjustability. Don’t like the Pro Dunk Crank System. bigge

Appx $1,578.00

Silverback

Silverback has been the GOLD Star for Value for basketball hoops for some time. I’m not sure how they can sell this solid hoop for this price. It is a great hoop. Easy install (relatively speaking – still a beast), very solid (Doesn’t shake much) – is cheap and long lasting. Tempered Glass backboard to prevent cracking and shattering. You CANNOT go wrong with this hoop. Definitely a top value. bigge

Appx $699.00

Spalding

SPALDING. Another freaking awesome hoop. Probably my favorite looking hoop of all of these. Love the Jerry West pole safety cushion. Almost wish I would have bought this 60′ tempered glass Spalding. This is a HOT system. Nothing bad to say. bigge

Appx $1,549.00

Goalrilla

WOW. Another awesome hoop. I have played on this system and I love it. It has a little wobble to it. It doesn’t effect play. It is solid, value priced and works well. Wish I had more to criticize here, but I don’t. I will put this on the bottom of my list because of the vibration. But I would still buy it. bigge

Appx $899.00

Lifetime 90084

Nah. If you are going to spend the time getting an in ground system, get one that lasts longer and looks better. Too cheap to put in ground. I would rather get the spalding portable system. bigge

Appx $196.00

Who am I? And why can I review Basketball Hoops?

I used to run a basketball review website, for about 4 years.  I reviewed every in ground and portable basketball hoop on the market.  I tested most of them and I read up on all of them.  I knew the details of each basketball system.  Than, I needed money and I sold my basketball hoop review website.  I wish I had kept it.

But, I remembered most of the information.  I was surprised when I went back to research and saw the new hoops on the market.  Not only new hoops but inground systems that have evolved and improved.

So, let’s go through this step by step together and make an educated decision on what hoop works best for your family.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to email me at basketballhoop@dadshopper.com.  I will try to respond to your email within 24 hours.  I usually can, unless I am swamped with work or out of town or on an electronic/computer/phone vacation.

WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IN A BASKETBALL HOOP

1). PRICE

Yes.  When our family started looking for a basketball hoop, we set price parameters.  We wanted to pay less than $1,000.  We would have preferred between $600 to $1000.  So, let’s look at which systems rank as the best value:

CHEAP AND SUCKY

LIFETIME 90084

Obviously the Lifetime 90084 is the cheapest hoop we have reviewed at less than $200.  It is not a good inground hoop though and we do not recommend it.  So, we will move on,

CHEAP AND GOOD

SILVERBACK

The Silverback system is one of our top Values.  We like it.  At $699 we love it.  The only reason we didn’t get it is because of the crank adjustable system.

LIFETIME MAMMOTH – BEST VALUE

stars

LIFETIME MAMMOTH

For our family we went with the Lifetime Mammoth.  We needed two hoops for each ends of the court.  For the 54′ backboard, we got two hoops for about $2000.

HIGHEST PRICE AND WORTH IT

The Highest priced system that we have reviewed as a top system is the Pro Dunk at $1,578.00.  This is a great system and if you can afford it, I think I would consider the pro dunk or the Spalding.  Both are awesome systems, that cost just a little more.

2). EASY TO ADJUST

Any of these hoops will be adjustable (usually from 7.5 feet to 10 feet).  We have young kids and we need the system to be easily adjustable.  I have tried the crank system.  Don’t love it.  Don’t necessarily hate it, it just isn’t for me.  Just don’t love the feel.

LIFETIME MAMOTH – BEST ADJUSTMENT

stars

Again, we went with the LIFETIME MAMMOTH.  It has the Best adjustable system (in my mind and experience):

Check out the video that we have uploaded below and you can see that this system can be adjusted by a five year old.  It adjusts to any height between 7.5 and 10 feet.  The hydraulics keep the hoop in place.  Very easy to raise and lower.

The Spalding Hoops just don’t crank well:

The Pro Dunk Hoop also has this Crank system: This is my friend’s hoop system.  He loves the hoop but says “I wish it had the adjustable Lifetime Mammoth system.”

3).  STURDY RIM

PRO DUNK – BEST RIM

stars

I have noticed with in ground basketball hoops, that sometimes you get ripped off with a crappy rim.  One that will flex and droop over the years.  One that is too stiff and not forgiving.  One that is just cheap and not worthy of the system.

For the Price you will Pay for an Inground Hoop, you need a Nice Breakaway Rim

This is the Order of Rims that we like:

#1: Pro Dunk:  We love it.  It is thick.  It is breakaway.  It becomes soft after play so that it is forgiving.  It is ideal for hard play.

Best basketball rim with hoop

#2: Spalding: Comes with a Positive Lock Breakaway Rim.  Spalding makes awesome rims.

#3: Goalrilla:  Sturdy rim that holds up to rough play.  No vibration breakaway.  Sweet rim.

#4: Silverback:  Again, we’re surprised that for this price you get an awesome breakaway rim:

#5: Lifetime Mammoth:  Yes, we like the Rim.  We have no problem with it.  In fact, some people like it more because it is a little bit skinnier (it is easier to grip when you dunk).  Yet, I think I would prefer the pro dunk or spalding rim:

#4). LOOK

If you are going to spend this much money, get something that looks good in your backyard, front porch or driveway.  Obviously the Lifetime 90084 is out:

We like the Spalding:

BUT,

We also love how Pro Dunk Looks:

And the Lifetime mammoth: For us, we think the Mammoth is the best look for our space.  It is not overwhelming or too fancy.  Just a Pretty, comfortable in ground hoop.

#5). LONGEST LASTING

We don’t have enough data on the other hoops to determine how long they last.  We can only review the reviews.  We do know however that the Lifetime Mammoth has stood up to 10 years of hard playing and still looks like this:

According to the Reviews, the Goalrilla and Pro Dunk hoops rank how on sustainability.

#6). BACKBOARD

Yes, the backboard is very important.  All of these upper end hoops have Tempered glass backboards and I have full confidence that none of them will crack or shatter with hard play (except for the Cheap Lifetime one).  The Goalrilla has a little too much wobble for me.  I would say the Spalding and Pro Dunk probably rank the highest on the Least Vibration when you dunk or shoot.

#7). INSTALLATION

I have only installed two hoops, the Pro Dunk (with my friend) and the Lifetime Mammoth.  Neither of these are easy.  In fact, they are freaking difficult.  I’m not a carpenter though.  I don’t even have a tool box.  I’m just a city slicker.  Call all of your friends to come help you.  It will take all day.

It took me and three guys all day to assemble our two Lifetime Mammoths:

Based on Reviews, I am going with Silverback as the winner for easiest to assemble.

#8). PADDING

Our Lifetime mammoth did not come with padding.  It costs extra.  Pro Dunk comes with this padding:

I like the Spalding Padding.  With Jerry West, it is by Far my Favorite:

SUMMARY

After much research and discussing with other people who have other hoops, our family went with the 54′ Lifetime Mammoth:

lifetime mammoth basketball hoop picture

We have no complaints.  Our kids love it and they use it all of the time.  It is easy to raise and lower.  We feel like it is a good value.  It was NOT easy to install.  It appears to survive the elements gracefully.  For US, it is the best choice.  For others, Pro Dunk or Spalding appear to be the way to go.  I have seen more and more people going with Pro Dunk in ground hoops lately.  I would recommend the Lifetime Mammoth.

I have personally played on and Loved the Goalrilla, Mammoth, Spalding and Pro Dunk.  I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these choices.  Still looking for an opportunity to play the Silverback hoop.

LIFETIME CRANK ADJUST

This Lifetime Crank Adjust hoop is one of my dark horses, especially if you are interested in a hoop for well under $1000.  Those who have owned this hoop for over 3 years say that it holds up to the elements and to long and hard playing.  High end quality product for a low end price.

Take a look at this one for appx $1,300 before you make your final decision.  I don’t see any flaws.

#2

PRO DUNK GOLD

This seems to be an up and coming favorite on Amazon and with reviewers.  Sturdy and doesn’t shake.  Easy for kids to adjust the height.  Holds up well to the elements.

 UPDATED#1

GOALRILLA FT SERIES

If I’m going to be completely honest with myself, and if I were to buy a new hoop today, I’m pretty confident that I’d go with this Goalrilla FT Series 72′ pro style basketball hoop.  It was a close call between this one, the spalding, the Mammoth and Pro Dunk Gold.  But, I was persuaded in the end by what I consider to be a more tried and tested hoop and hardware.  I am fully confident that the user of this hoop will be satisfied from installation to 5 years down the road of hard playing.  Solid warranty and company backing this product.

And Installation Video (You can actually purchase installation with Amazon who has local contractors to do the work for you, which I highly recommend after doing two myself).
